Objective: Time to Shift Vision Zero to Vision 100 goal, because the Goal setting must have better clarity else people will not follow and will not be achieved. .
Vision Zero goal is originated in Sweden in 1997 to reduce road accidents and serious injuries to zero. Sweden has reduced their road accident deaths from 538 to 214 in 28 years but could not achieve their goal of Vision Zero.
Science says if desired results are not achieved, upgrade the quality of seeds, soil and process. If we keep doing what we have always done we will keep getting what we have always got.
We should set goals that lead to positive and desirable outcomes. We
should focus not on the things we don't want, but on the things we do want. We
should focus on safe trip rather than to focus on reducing road accidents. "Vision Zero" is a road traffic safety strategy focused on eliminating all traffic fatalities and severe injuries.
When the goals lack clarity people don’t follow or implement them in their daily routine. Vision Zero or Zero fatalities or halve accident by 50% goals are having negative and undesirable outcome, and can not be achieved The fundamental principle says we should not remember those what we don't want.
What we focus on will grow. watering positive seeds with positive thoughts, words, and actions leads to a flourishing life, while watering negative seeds with negative thoughts and words leads to suffering. When we remember road accidents we water road accidents, road accidents will grow. When we remember safe trip we water safe trip, safe trips will grow.
United Nations has set a sustainable goal as No poverty and Zero Hunger under their SDGs. Zero hunger goal and No poverty goal will not be achieved because these are not in line with the positive psychology.
Road accidents is a negative and undesirable outcome of a daily road trip, and sustainable safe trip is a positive and desirable outcome of a daily trip so we should set a goal which are in line with the positive and desirable outcome. Hence our goal is, vision 100% sustainable safe trip. Vision without action is an illusion. Action without vision is a confusion.
Various countries have adopted Vision Zero goal, but it should be changed from Vision Zero to Vision 100. Global community is working on the improvement of outer world and inner world improvement is ignored. Vision 100 promote inner world improvement. "Improve oneself 1% everyday, be 100% better in 100 days". Vision 100 is very apt in this phrase and campaign and if both the parties give their 100% effort then crash can be prevented 100%. If the entire world is striving for 100% prevention, the Vision 100 goal will be largely achieved.
Vision Zero aims to reduce road accidents, which is a negative and undesirable outcome and people will not follow it. We discussed with people of all ages, and everyone voted for Vision 100.
It takes two hands to clap and two parties to collide. If both parties try for their 100% for the prevention of road crash, 100% that crash will be prevented. If 100% responsibility of preventing road crashes is put on others, then crashes will definitely happen.
The 3 major factors responsible for a crash is people, vehicle and environment (road infra, road traffic lights, road signs, weather etc). Whole world are considering these 3 major factors for road crashes.
Assuming if the time of a crash between the parties at a potential crash point is 02.30.48 pm and the party A reaches at this point by 02.30.48 and the party B arrives at this point by 02.30.52 pm, the crash is 100% prevented by the party B who made 100% efforts to prevent this crash, and the party A has made 0% effort to prevent this crash. But the crash is prevented by 100%.
When reducing road accidents the focus is reacting to potential hazards and mitigating immediate risks - Vision Zero
When advancing safety the focus is to be proactive and make systemic changes to reduce risk at its source. - Vision 100
The finding of our research has established that the 3 major factors responsible for a crash are people, place and time. The place here refers to the potential crash point and the area of this point varies with the speed of the vehicles. The more the speed the larger the area of potential crash point.
In the conclusion we recommend that key stakeholders must set their goals as Vision 100 to achieve sustainable road safety as it requires self-improvement which should be promoted across the globe. In vision zero goal people are trying to improve external world, internal world improvement is left behind by the global community.
